I have windows updates in the control panel and some are more than a year old; some are rarely used. the updates that i want to remove are the window updates; add/remove programs. The one's I want to remove are security updates that are most than a year old

no, you shouldn't remove them.



by removing security updates, you are re-opening holes in your computer and returning your computer to the state it was before the security updates were downloaded and installed.



hackers/crackers don't only scan computers on the internet for the latest exploits and holes in windows, but rather they run programs against the machine to find ANY known vulnerabilities.



as such, you should leave all security updates where they are to avoid becoming a hacker's victim because of an old hole.

you can go to your add/remove programs and check the "Show Updates" box at the top and they should be at the bottom of the list
They were downloaded for a reason. Removing them exposes you once again to whatever they were meant to correct. Don't remove them!
You could remove them but there wouldnt be much point! They are there for many reasons and uninstlling one can have a definite impact on the others. If you are going to remove one, you will have to disable windows update or it will just pop back up again also!
